Julaan Derrick

Conway, South Carolina

Julaan was born in 1957 in Columbia, S.C., while her father, Julius, was attending the University of South Carolina and playing football for the Gamecocks. Her mother, Polly, is from Horry County. After she graduated from college and law school, she came back to Horry County and has been a resident here for 58 years.

Julaan attended Conway High School and graduated in 1975. After high school, she attended college at Columbia College in Columbia, South Carolina. While there, she also attended classes at the University of South Carolina and designed her own degree graduating with a BA in Psychology and Criminal Justice. After graduating from Columbia College in 1979, she attended law school at the University of South Carolina. She graduated from law school in 1982.

After graduating, she headed home to Conway and applied to work at the 15th Judicial Circuit Solicitor's Office. She became the first female Assistant Solicitor hired for the 15' Judicial Circuit (Horry and Georgetown County). She began her career as a prosecutor. Her second year in the Solicitor's Office, she was sent to family court to prosecute juveniles and to represent the Department of Social Services. She was encouraged by a family court judge to prosecute the abusive parents. This led to a speciality in the prosecution of child sex crimes and other criminal offenses against children. She was the first Assistant Solicitor in South Carolina to design a way for child victims to testify in General Sessions Court without having to be present in the same room as the perpetrator. She prosecuted all types of criminal cases from drug possession and distribution, armed robbery, criminal sexual conduct cases against adults and children, murder, and homicide by child abuse. She left the Solicitor's Office in 1994 and went to work for her brother Dirk J. Derrick, where she handled mainly family court cases. She also handled criminal cases.

In 2004, she opened her own law firm and she exclusively concentrates on family law cases. She handles divorces, custody (for fathers, mothers, grandparents and other third parties), visitation, adoption, child support, contempt hearings, Order of Protection cases, alimony, and equitable division cases. She has been a Guardian ad Litem in child custody cases and Department of Social services cases. She has been a presenter at CLE seminars both locally and state-wide. She is on the Family Court Advisory Committee. She has assisted for years in the presentation of the family law CLE in Horry County. She has been a mentor to attorneys through the local family court program and through the South Carolina Supreme Court. Her prosecution of a DSS caseworker in Columbia, South Carolina, landed her a cameo appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show. She has been a guest on WMBF's local show, Legal Access, on several occasions.

Julaan has been active in her community and has served in the past on the board for Rape Crisis, the adult chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the Horry County Children's Mentoring Program, which her father started and directed for over twenty years.
